Edinburgh Uni gets crafty with Greyfriars Tartan
Grassmarket Community Project is well-known for developing inspiring and creative partnerships with like-minded organisations.
So, when Kevin, GCP’s Volunteer Manager, contacted Edinburgh University’s Crafting Group about developing greater links with our Tartan Team, a creative spark was lit!
Juliet, the Society’s Charities Coordinator, said,
‘We really want to support our local community and the Grassmarket is just down the road, so it is great to hear from Kevin and to be able to help the Tartan Team.’
Our talented Tartan Team and GCP ambassadors, Janie and Anne, visited the 50 university crafters at their regular Wednesday afternoon session.
They introduced the group to the work of the GCP, and importantly the role of the Tartan Social Enterprise. They brought along tartan offcuts so everyone could have a go at working with the Greyfriars Tartan.
Juliet was delighted,
‘It was fantastic! We were so pleased to make over 20 tartan flowers and roses of a good enough quality to be sold in the shop.’
‘Everyone was talking about the visit afterwards. It was great to find out more about GCP‘s services too. As students, we get a discount as well as free wifi in Coffee Saints and many of us have already been down to the wee Tartan Shop on Candlemaker Row to see it in operation and buy presents for our families!’
Juliet is also hopeful for future collaborations,
‘We really hope that meeting Anne and Janie will encourage some of our craft group to volunteer with the Tartan Team. We also hope that Anne and Janie will come back next semester and share their skills with us again – maybe it could become a regular event!’

We are often looking for more volunteers to support our Tartan Workshop. If you have the time and skills and would like to work with an award-winning, friendly and passionate group of volunteers, we’d love to hear from you.
All our volunteers receive ongoing support and have access to free training throughout the year.
