From the Heart… our first published poetry collection.
Our annual Summer Showcase gave us the perfect opportunity to launch the Grassmarket Community Project’s first poetry anthology, ‘From the Heart’ which shows off our members’ writing and artistic talents. It includes 35 different poets, over 50 poems and 15 illustrators. The book covers themes as diverse as nostalgia, mental health, nature, love and community.
All the poems are powerful and thought provoking. Publisher, Jenny Renton, has been surprised at their quality ‘They are all tremendous poets, we should respect them all.’
The anthology is now available to buy with all proceeds going to GCP.
‘I am thrilled to be part of this project. I have been in editing and typesetting for over 40 years and the poems in this book are first class, the poets are quite brilliant’. Jenny Renton, Main Point Book Publishers .
Sasha and Elspeth, both contributors to the anthology, attended the launch and reflected on how expressive writing has been transformative for them. In 2019, Elspeth returned to the UK from a long period living in USA. ‘I was looking for something to do and attended two member meetings before lockdown hit. I then attended online during lockdown and I enjoyed it immensely. I loved having the company and listening to other people and what inspires them, it’s better than therapy and great fun.’
Sasha, one of the readers at the launch, echoed Elspeth’s thoughts. ‘It is great fun with two wonderful tutors who are very talented and bring out the best in us all.’ After a career in Further/Higher Education and the Trade Union movement, Sasha was looking for new experiences as she moved into retirement. ‘I met someone at the bus stop who was telling me how much they enjoyed the Grassmarket so I thought I’d give it a go. It really is so welcoming and such a supportive space.’
Sasha confidently recited two of her poems at the book launch, you can hear ‘A Celtic Blessing for a new grandchild’. When she started presenting her work she admits she was nervous, ‘I was used to public speaking but this was different as reading your own work comes from the heart. I’m more confident now though, I’ve even done a few open mike events, most recently Push the Boat Out.’
Sasha was not the only poet reading their work. Dave managed to successfully mix searing political comment with gentle humour in his poem, ‘I was inspired to write as I’m angry about the welfare cuts. I was nervous reading aloud but really enjoyed it.’ Rebecca opened proceedings with a poem about a cat and, coincidentally, Steve closed the recital with his contribution about another cat!
Perry has done a fantastic job curating the anthology. ‘We had so many people putting their work forward for the book that it was difficult to choose the final works, all our members are incredibly creative’. At the Showcase launch, he thanked ‘The many contributors to the book which would not have been possible without the effort of the writers and support of lots of people, including the publishers and Janice MacKay and Jess Orr who guide the Expressive Writing Group with care and creativity.’
The poetry anthology is only part of our Grassmarket Voice initiative which is helping our members explore their creativity without barriers.
