Meet Alex, our new Hospitality & Events Manager

Alex at Coffee Saints

Meet Alex,
our new Hospitality and Events Manager

Regular customers at Coffee Saints will already recognise Alex’s smiling face. He joined our award-winning social enterprise team in March 2023 and was soon promoted to Coffee Saints supervisor.

He has now been promoted again!

We’re delighted to announce Alex has joined the events team as GCP’s new Hospitality and Events Manager.

The story so far

Alex brings a breadth of experience to his new role. In his 20’s, Alex worked in hospitality and then became an Art Dealer, before retraining in finance and financial crime prevention, latterly working with the Law Society of Scotland.

For 10 years, he lived on the small Channel Island of Sark, where there were only 500 inhabitants, no cars or even streetlights! It was quite a contrast moving back home to Edinburgh in 2018, but he has no regrets.

In January 2023, Alex decided to leave the world of financial crime prevention. He was looking for part time work, saw an advert for Coffee Saints and hasn’t looked back since,

‘It appealed to me because, if I am going to be working, I’d sooner work with a not-for-profit organisation. The Grassmarket Community Project is a good fit for me, I believe in what the organisation does.’

Alex has thoroughly enjoyed his first year with us,

‘It is great to be part of a team and see the business grow and grow. Over the months, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know regular customers and our Members, they are a lovely bunch!’

The next chapter with GCP

In his new role as Hospitality and Events Manager, Alex is really keen to increase the profile of GCP’s programme of public events and event hire services.

Both are vital social enterprise income streams needed to support GCP’s essential work with marginalised people,

‘I want to make sure we’re making the most of the assets we have.

My main goal is to increase revenues, so we can continue to do the important work we do for our Members at the Grassmarket Community Project.’

Alex is already looking forward to his first big event which is the Church of Scotland General Assembly meeting, held at the Assembly Hall from 18-21 May. Alex is not phased just ‘looking forward to it!’

And when he’s not working?

Alex supports the GCP in other ways too!

He is a keen walker and took part in the Kiltwalk last year (pictured below), helping raise much-needed funds for the project. He also volunteers on GCP’s long-distance walks, part of our Members Programme, where he enjoys spending time getting to know our Members.

Corporate Fundraising with GCP

In his spare time, Alex enjoys travel, cooking and most of all,

‘Spending quality time with my friends is very important to me.’

Quality time with people is what it’s all about. We’re delighted as Alex brings his warmth, compassion and commitment to GCP to his new role,

‘I know I can make a valuable contribution from my life and work experience.’

Thank you, Alex!
