VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Read and Write volunteers

read and write - Grassmarket Community Programme

Read and Write Group – can you help?

Wednesdays 10.30am-1pm
Free lunch 1pm -2pm, if required

The Wednesday reading and writing group is a lively and enthusiastic gathering of Members who want to improve their literacy skills.

There are a wide range of abilities in the group. Some need one to one support while others are happy to work fairly independently, with just occasional help, encouragement and/or advice.

We also work with some to complete basic skills communication certificates through SQA. The class is very popular, so we need help to give everyone the support they need to progress their skills. Volunteers help bridge that gap and make a real difference to the learning.

The most important skills for a literacy volunteer are patience, empathy, a willingness to help and to learn AND enthusiasm for the importance of lifelong learning for all.   A literacy tutor leads the group and will provide support.

Become a volunteer and help empower a learner to reach their full potential to participate more fully in society.

Essential Skills needed: Must be motivated, enthusiastic, reliable, and trustworthy, organised about any task given to them. Also have excellent communication skills, patient, friendly and work in a team, especially with team group exercises.

Desirable skills: 1-1 and group work experience but not essential
