Lee Ann’s Story

Lee Ann is one of our many inspiring Members. She has been coming to the Grassmarket Community Project for over two years, after she heard about the GCP from a friend who said to her,

‘You may be happy there’

and they were right!

Lee Ann filled in her Member Application form and hasn’t looked backed since.

Originally from Perth, Lee Ann moved to Edinburgh with her partner 5 years ago. She says,

‘GCP has changed my life for the better since I came to Edinburgh. When we moved here, I felt a bit isolated but now I’m busy every day and not stuck in the house.’

I can join in anything here

Initially, Lee Ann started coming along to IT classes and Make and Mend, then soon she added Art and the Learning Hub to her weekly GCP groups. She is a regular here and a friendly face around the Grassmarket Centre.

Lee Ann is also an inspiration. She has had a disability since birth and is real advocate for inclusion. She strongly believes that a disability shouldn’t hold you back,

‘I’ve played boccia, done swimming and ten pin bowling. I can do all this stuff.

‘If you get out there, you can do it!’

She is keen to stress that the GCP team,

‘…really look after disabled people and individual needs. If you need help, you just ask for it, they are always happy to help, and I can join in anything here.’

As well as coming along to the GCP, Lee Ann now volunteers on reception for another organisation, having completed her online training here at our Learning Hub. She has also started attending a regular Reading and Creative Writing group in Edinburgh, where she is writing a book about disability, which she’d love to get published one day.

Lee Ann encourages anyone to come to the Grassmarket Community Project,

‘It’s a very friendly place.  Come and join us and have fun.  Don’t be nervous.’
