Volunteer Opportunity: Join Our Make & Mend Community!
Looking for a creative, sociable way to give back? Come and be part of something genuinely special at the Make & Mend group with the Grassmarket Community Project.
Every Tuesday, this vibrant and welcoming group brings people together to learn new skills, share stories, and enjoy the simple joy of making and mending. Whether it’s sewing, fixing a favourite item, or just having a chat over coffee, Make & Mend is as much about connection as it is creativity.
Why volunteer with us?
- Be part of a friendly, supportive community that feels like family
- Help others build confidence, skills, and independence
- Learn (or develop!) creative skills like sewing, mending, and crafting
- Make a real difference to people’s wellbeing and sense of belonging
What you’ll do
You’ll support sessions by encouraging and chatting with members, helping with simple sewing or creative tasks, and lending a hand with setup, tea/coffee, or anything needed on the day. No expert skills required—just a willingness to help and get involved.
Become a volunteer and help empower a learner to reach their full potential to participate more fully in society.
What we’re looking for
Friendly, patient, and enthusiastic people who enjoy working with others.
For Make & Mend, any of the following skills are especially welcome:
- Basic sewing machine skills
- Hand sewing
- Mending & darning
- Knitting
- Embroidery
- Crochet
- Weaving
- Felting
- Or other textile crafts (e.g. rug hooking, cross stitch)
We aim to have a mix of skills across our volunteers so we can support a wide range of projects. That said, you don’t need to be an expert—if you can thread a needle and enjoy spending time with others, you’ll fit right in.
When?
Tuesdays, around 4–5 hours each week. Whether you can stay for the full session or just part of it, we’d love to have you involved.
