Edinburgh Film Guild with GCP

Supported by the Edinburgh Film Guild

In early 2024, the Grassmarket Community Picture House established an exciting new partnership with the Edinburgh Film Guild.

Attracted by the quality of GCPH’s cinema programme, Jim Dunnigan, Chair of Edinburgh Film Guild, is delighted with the new partnership

‘The Edinburgh Guild is all about building long-term, sustainable partnerships to support screenings locally to help ensure good cinema is accessible to everyone, everywhere.’

‘The quality of GCPH programming is outstanding, so the Guild is keen to do all we can to help support and promote this fantastic gem in the heart of Edinburgh.’

Since its founding in 1929, the Edinburgh Film Guild has organised and presented programmes of films not normally shown in mainstream cinemas. The Guild has a long history of organising film festivals, screenings, and educational events, and has played a vital role in bringing cinema of all genres to the people of Edinburgh and the surrounding area. The Guild is run entirely by volunteers. It will be the Guild’s 100th Anniversary in 2030.

A little more about the Edinburgh Film Guild

The founders of the Guild, John Grierson and Forsyth Hardy were at the forefront of the ‘film society movement’ that developed in the 1920s and 1930s.

These societies showed a wide range of films from across the globe and ran education programmes about film and cinematic culture

The Guild created Edinburgh’s first two Filmhouses and established the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 1947, managing the Festival for its first 31 years.

The Guild was also a key partner in establishing the third Filmhouse in 1978.

The Guild have held or facilitated a wide range of short courses over the years, including many of the University of Edinburgh’s Film and Media in-person short courses.

in 2021, the Guild entered into a formal partnership with the Institut Français d’Ecosse (French Institute of Scotland), holding several film seasons since.

In 2022, The Guild led the campaign to save the Filmhouse, but was unable to prevent its sale to a private company. The Guild donated its archive to the National Library of Scotland in 2024

The Guild’s 95th film season begins in October.

It will be the Guild’s 100th Anniversary in 2030.
