Help us build our boat!

Help us build our boat!

You may have heard we’re building a boat. And, you can help!

Help us go from this…

Skiff model build

to this!

Skiff story - St Ayles Skiff

All hands on deck!

As the main boat build continues over the summer, our talented Woodwork team are making two beautiful scale models, to help showcase the project and fire your imagination. One model is already on display at Grassmarket Centre and attracting great interest!

Campbell, Skiff Project Leader and GCP’s Wood Workshop Assistant Manager shares more about the whole project,

‘It is great for our members and pre-apprentices. They are learning new woodworking skills and finding out about Edinburgh’s coastal history.

‘Once it’s launched, members will be able to learn to row and practise boat maintenance – all this whilst developing skills, confidence and wellbeing along the way!’

A team effort – progress to date

It has long been a dream of GCP to build a boat. This year, thanks to funders including National Lottery Heritage Fund, HSBC, Edinburgh Airport and John Lewis, we are now realising that dream. We’re building a Scottish clinker-style rowing boat known as a St Ayles Skiff.

The skiff is being built out at Granton Lighthouse Depot and GCP’s talented woodwork team, members, pre-apprentices and corporate volunteers are making good progress. We are also collaborating with the Newhaven Rowing Club who will teach us how to row and handle the boat safely.

The build is on schedule for completion this autumn. Watch this space for more updates.

She’s a model and she’s looking good!

Meanwhile, when he isn’t working on the main build, Campbell, Skiff Project Leader and GCP’s Wood Workshop Assistant Manager has been creating the scale models in the workshop at the Grassmarket Centre.
