Greening the Grassmarket?

Some of us met with Mike Penney, Alan Bell and David Jamieson from CEC, in early May, to talk about Greening the Grassmarket

It is our understanding that it was agreed for the CEC to provide some large planters (possibly 4, each approx 2 metres in length) for the middle section of Grassmarket at the road side. This will be as a first stage for an increasing number of planters and hanging baskets. This may also serve to reduce access to motorists using the area as a car park.

Well, it seems that the planters have arrived! Not quite what we were lead to expect but they do add some greenery and break up the drab Grassmarket landscape.

Edinburgh in Bloom

Edinburgh has been selected to represent Scotland in the large city category of the national ‘Britain In Bloom’ competition for 2009. Throughout the year groups and organisations are running events & activities to involve people in improving Edinburgh's natural environment.(details here)

You can support the campaign by having hanging baskets or window boxes. If you register your support online you will be eligible to receive a discount on 'Edinburgh In Bloom' items at the City of Edinburgh Council's Inch Park Nursery. (register here)

Window-box Workshop - May 28th 2009
Window-box Workshop

On 28th May the CEC parks team came down to the Grassmarket with a truck load of plants, soil and expertise to help us residents to create some wonderful window boxes.

A great time was had by all at the window-box workshop- and outdoors no less, in the so called 'events space'!

This was the first but, no doubt, not the last of our efforts to bring some colour to the Grassmarket area.

We were most impressed by the CEC Parks team who made it all possible, they were so knowledgable and helpful. Many thanks to them all - we hope to be in regular contact with them about plant and blooming matters in the future.
