The Writing's on the Wall

Graffiti, like fly-posting, is an unfortunate and detestable part of city life. There are some groups and individuals who actively promote graffiti as if it was an art-form. Art it is not.

Graffiti is a wanton act of vandalism. It defaces property and detracts form the appeal of an area.

Graffiti costs us all:
  • property owners face the cost of removal
  • taxpayers have the costs of policing

We do not have to live with it!

If you see it - report it. Report it to the police, the council and the owners of the buildings.

Graffiti Removal

The City of Edinburgh Council operates a specialist graffiti treatment unit. The graffiti treatment unit aims to remove all racist or offensive graffiti as quickly as possible. If the graffiti is on private property then it is the responsibility of the owner to treat it. Under the new Anti-Social Behaviour act the Council has the power to force some types of private property owners, like utility companies, to treat graffiti.

In addition, the Council supports volunteers who wish to tackle low level graffiti in their neighbourhood. For more information on how volunteers can get involved in tackling graffiti call: Keep Edinburgh Clean Programme Co-ordinator on 0131 529 2703 .

To report graffiti or for more information on how to treat it, you should contact: The City of Edinburgh Council, Services for Communities on 0131 529 3030.
