We have been awarded a community grant through the Community Partnership and City of Edinburgh Council so now have money for the notice board (a surprising amount of fees involved), community events, newsletters, a full residents’ survey, hall hire, window boxes and bat boxes, etc.

Why does the Grassmarket need another group?

Over the past couple of years, at least, we have been subject to radical changes in our local environment. Regardless of our personal views on the current outcome, many local people felt disenfranchised as a result of the change process.

The City of Edinburgh Council did try to engage us in consultation throughout the planning and implementation of the Grassmarket Environmental Works. Many of us however came to the conclusion at an early stage that consultation did not include taking account of locals' views.

Other groups which are active in the area seemed to be inaccessible and unaccountable. While it is believed that they were acting in our interests, details of their activities, meeting arrangements and minutes were often difficult to come by.

At several public meetings, hosted by the Council or its contractors, it became apparent that we were a group of disparate individuals rather than a collective voice.

G.R.ASS can be a body for the local voice in the future.

We may not all agree on every issue but we can try to be supportive, representative, inclusive and transparent.

G.R.ASS is not intended to be in competition with any other local group; we would welcome the opportunity to work in partnership with them.
